Google Jobs in Australia

What’s it like to work at Google Sydney?

Google’s Sydney, Australia office opened 3 years ago as a two-person sales team to help sell AdWords in the local marketplace. It expanded. The original Google Maps team set up shop alongside. The sales staff grew. Marketing and on-line support joined in. Today, the Sydney office, set in a spectacular location with harbour and city views, houses Sales, Support, Systems Operations, Engineering, and more. It is the base for Google’s activities in Australia and New Zealand and helps support the whole Asia-Pacific region.

Mike

Mike (Account Associate)

In 2004 Mike graduated from the University of Queensland with degrees in law and computer science. “When I finished university, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer in a big law firm. However, I quickly began to realize that I really enjoy thinking about and working on Internet related projects. I love working at Google because I get to explore interesting things all day long with incredibly interesting, smart people.”

Before coming to Google, Mike ran an internet software company that designed solutions for small businesses. While running the company, Mike discovered Google AdWords and became hooked on the power of the advertising platform. “I could see the huge potential AdWords has to change the way business is conducted – whether you are a multinational company or a local corner store. Google AdWords changes the dynamics of business. It makes it easy for businesses everywhere to reach out to their ideal customers in a cost-effective way.”

Each day, Mike advises clients on the best strategies for their advertising campaigns and is also part of the local technical team. “I absolutely love coming to work everyday, not only because of the fun we have, but also because of the interesting challenges that are constantly thrown my way. If you are self-motivated, there is never a shortage of amazing things to work on!”

Adam

Adam (Software Engineer)

After finishing his Computer Science Honours degree at UNSW in 2005, Adam was bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. “One of the most satisfying aspects of a career in computing is developing software that is used by other people. At Google, my software is being used on a global level, enriching people’s lives worldwide.”

At university, Adam developed a fascination for algorithms and distributed systems, and completed an Honours thesis in machine learning. “Many people who complete computing degrees at university end up in jobs that do not challenge their technical and problem solving abilities, especially in Australia. As a Software Engineer at one of the most exciting companies in the world, I am constantly being challenged and learning new skills. We handle amazingly large datasets, and to manage these requires some of the most sophisticated algorithms and infrastructure in use today.”

“The work environment is amazing. I am surrounded by some of the most brilliant people in the industry today: I sit next to one of the original creators of Google Maps, and opposite him is the author of a textbook I used at university. The focus is on getting the work done, rather than working a fixed number of hours - a flexibility that I thrive in. It feels less like sitting in an office, and more like being at university – but with much better food! (And did I mention we get free lunch?)”

By his second week of working for Google, Adam had already worked in Silicon Valley and New York. “Google is my passport to the world – it is the opportunity of a lifetime.”
