What's it like to work in Sydney?
Google’s Sydney office houses Sales & Business Development, Engineering & Network Operations, Marketing and Communications, and more.
The Engineering Centre in Sydney is a leading R&D hub at the forefront of Internet technology and development. Our software engineers solve complex and interesting problems. To handle information at the scale of the web requires ideas from just about every area of computer science, including information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design, etc., although not all at once!
Here are some of the exciting areas that keep software engineers in Sydney busy:
- Geospatial: We work on Google Maps and the Google Maps API. We make browsers do crazy things using computer graphics, new geometric algorithms, and a deep understanding of HTML rendering and JavaScript engines. We experiment wildly and develop machine learning algorithms to select relevant local ads across Google Place Search, Maps, Earth and Place Pages.
- Apps: Google users and businesses rely on a range of Google Apps, including Blogger, Android, App Engine, and Docs and Spreadsheets – that our engineers help to develop. We also contribute heavily to apps infrastructure, mobile apps, and even search.
- Infrastructure: We build Google’s cloud computing platform, App Engine, which enables developers and corporations to harness Google’s massively scalable infrastructure. In addition, our engineers in Network Infrastructure are pushing the boundaries of network automation, to deliver a self-diagnosing and self-correcting intelligent network.
- Open source: We also contribute heavily to the open-source community through projects such as Chromium and WebKit, Wave, Closure Tools, and more.
- Production: We’ve got teams of engineers that specialize in the reliability and scalability of software, systems, infrastructure and networks. The Site Reliability Engineering teams support some of Google’s most popular products - including Maps, Blogger, and App Engine - and ensure continuous service to millions of users around the world. The Google production network operates at a massive scale, and we have teams of engineers who tackle challenging network configuration, administration, and stability issues.
- Heaps more: On any given day, you'll find our Engineers working on a full range of Google products too numerous to list here, from Google Gadgets to AdWords and everything in between.
