How to make My Maps

Create your own maps and enter the My Maps Australia Awards!

Step 1 Deciding on the My Maps title.

1.Access Google Maps.

2.If you are not logged in, log in from the link at the top right.
   * You need a Google account to create My Maps.
First create a Google account, if you do not have one.

3.Click the My Maps tab. A My Maps page like the one in the figure below appears.

4.Click Create new map.

5.Enter a title and description for the map. You can also make the map public or unlisted.

STEP 2 Creating My Maps

1.Click on the pin icon at the top left of the map.
Your cursor changes into a placemark icon with "X" crosshairs. Click on the map to place the icon at the location of the "X." If you have placed the placemark by mistake, cancel it by pressing the Escape key. You can drag and drop placemarks to move them.
* When you have started creating a map, make sure you remember to press the Save button. If you close a window without saving, you may lose the map you had been making.

2.When you place a placemark, enter a title and description for it.
There are three ways to enter a description; a, b and c.

  • Plain Text
You can write text in the description field.
  • Rich Text
You can add formatted text, coloured text, or assign links to text.
You can also press at the far right to insert an image
    from the Web.
  • Edit HTML
This is for people with HTML skills. Try experimenting with the layout.
  • Changing placemarks
You can click the placemark icon at the top right to change the placemark in various ways.
You can also use additional functions, for example to use photographs as placemarks.

3.In Google My Maps, you can draw lines on maps.
Click at the top left of the map. You could use this useful function to draw a running course, or the route of a journey. You can also use it to find information like the distance of your route to work.

  • Click the first point of the line you want to draw.
  • Click points to connect them to the line in the order you want. If you click a point by mistake, don't worry; you can correct it later.
Finish drawing the line, and double click the end point.
  • When you have finished drawing the line, you can enter a title and description, in the same way as with placemarks.
You can click the line icon at the top right to
edit the line's width, colour or other attributes

4.You can also add shapes to the map.
You can use this to mark areas, for example areas inhabited by certain animals, or camping areas. Click at the top left of the map, and create a shape in the same way as you would create a line.

Now your map is complete. Finally, remember to press the Save button at the top left of the page. Click the Done button to finish editing. You can press the Edit button to start editing the map again.
