Washington Square FC, a soccer team in Brookline, Massachusetts with a roster of players ranging in age from 22 to 29 years old, came up with a unique way to decrease the cost of playing.
"We have to buy jerseys, field equipment," said team captain Jon, who declined to share his last name. "We thought we'd go big and try to find someone to bring in a revenue stream."
The team reached out to RedTube on Twitter and within 10 minutes, Jon said the company responded.
Team members and the company worked out a sponsorship deal in which the company name is featured prominently on team jerseys. While specific financial details of the sponsorship could not be discussed - Jon said the team signed a non-disclosure agreement - he said operational costs have significantly decreased.
Professional teams rely on sponsorship teams to pay for player salaries and operational costs. Rich sponsorship deals land company names featured on team jerseys though certain brands - like RedTube - are barred from such agreements with professional players.
After the deal was announced, Washington Square FC has received international attention and decided to sell their jerseys. In the first days of opening an online shop to sell the branded jerseys, Jon estimates the team has received 200 orders. He said, "I'm shipping stuff to Europe, Malaysia."
