Inside Google Dublin (EU HQ)

The Irish equivalent of Silicon Valley finds it’s home in Dublin’s booming tech quarter, Silicon Docks. Dublin is one of our major regional Sales offices, with teams helping businesses of all sizes reach their market goals. On the tech side, Site Reliability Engineers and Network Operations teams help ensure that we deliver a fast, efficient, and powerful web to customers around the world, whenever they need it.

We’re proud of the role we’ve played in revitalizing the neighborhood, and the impact we’ve had on the city. The area has become a hub of Ireland’s emergent technology scene, bursting with start-ups as well as the European headquarters for some of the biggest tech companies in the world. We designed our offices to celebrate the city, with everything from music rooms to a kitchen disguised as a traditional Irish pub. Throughout our buildings, we have five cafes and 40 micro kitchens. Each of our floors has a different Google-themed motif, like “Search” and “App-iness,” and hundreds of meetings rooms that imagine aspects of Irish, tech, or green culture.

As Google’s center for sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, we work with a broad range of businesses and markets. Small businesses—as well as multinationals—from more than 50 countries in the region, rely on products like Chrome, Search, Maps, AdWords, Apps, and more.

Whether it’s because of our diversity, our passion for what we do, or our location in the heart of one of the world’s friendliest, most charming cities, the work that we do here is great craic.

We’re central to Google’s business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and we have a really diverse, international team, so this is a particularly great place to work.

Meanwhile, our technical teams support Google infrastructure across EMEA, ensuring that all our products work the way they’re supposed to. And we’re home to teams in Finance, Legal and People Operations, as well.

Googlers in Dublin hail from more than 65 countries and speak more than 45 languages, making us worldly in the best possible sense. Our chefs help us all feel at home by serving scrumptious dishes from around the world in our amazing cafes. TGIF events help us stay connected to the wider Google community back home in Mountain View, and throughout other regions.

What makes Google Dublin unique?

Like our city, the culture of Google Dublin is totally unique. Around our office, you can find examples of both the city’s traditional and more eclectic heritage. From graffiti art to historic photos and murals depicting scenes of Irish folklore, we celebrate Dublin’s many facets. Here, Googlers can take a break in massage rooms, play billiards or classic arcade games, or even take a dip in our lap pool.

We’re extra proud to have our newest European data center located right in the neighborhood. For more than a year, we invested more than €75 million to transform a former industrial lot in West Dublin into a brand new data center, bringing new jobs to to the city. As with so many of our other office sites, we strive to make local geography work in our favor when possible. One way we do this is by using an air-cooling system that takes advantage of Ireland’s naturally cool climate, keeping energy efficiency high and server temperatures steady. Also, not to brag, but we might have earned a Guinness World Record for largest human beatbox ensemble.

How does Google Dublin give back?

Our Age Engage program pairs Googlers with older members of the community to get them up to speed on all things digital. Through Google Grants, we help local nonprofits reach a broader audience with AdWords. And through GoogleServe, we volunteer with organizations like the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. We also host professional events at our offices such as Ireland’s final presidential debate (broadcast live on YouTube) and with organizations like the Connecting Women in Technology network.

Has Google Dublin hosted any particularly cool or famous visitors?

Yep – from a director at the Large Hadron Collider (Dr. Steve Meyers) to a Nobel Peace Prize winner (Betty Williams) to a former Official IRA member turned peace-campaigner (Henry Robinson).
